Key findings

Purpose trumps profit. In an era of uncertainty, your company’s purpose is its North Star. Follow that to navigate uncertainty, not short-term profits.

Create value for wider society, not just shareholders. Business has an important role to play in driving change in society and employees increasingly want leaders to be vocal in how they plan to do so. Your ESG strategy is just as important as your business one.

Self-learning and growth mindsets. The pace of change in business means organisations need to update their skill sets continually – and so do leaders. Address your weaknesses; don't just build on your strengths.

Aim for progress, not perfection. Complexity means that perfection is an illusion. With a constantly changing context, aim for progress on projects rather than finality. With lower expectations comes more room for experimentation and innovation.

Embrace the discomfort of ‘not knowing’. The expectation that leaders should be omniscient, all-knowing individuals is false. In such a changeable world, leaders need to be comfortable saying “I don’t know”. Embrace the unknown.

‘Quiet quitting’ is about relationships, not motivations. Employees who don’t engage fully with their work are lacking trust in their leaders rather than motivation. Building better relationships improves productivity.

Good leadership isn’t about instinct. Crisis management means evaluating and iterating as you go. Be flexible, avoid making snap decisions and, above all, communicate.
