Hospitality apprenticeship case study: Poppie Tilley at Hilton

By Future TalentEd

Poppie Tilley joined Hilton St George’s Park two years ago. She now works as a conference and events assistant and as a hub desk host.

How did you find out about the role at Hilton?

I was in sixth form, studying for my A-levels and unsure if I wanted to go to university. I made the decision to leave school half way through my A-levels. Now, with an apprenticeship at Hilton, I definitely feel I made the right decision. The apprenticeship has helped to build my confidence and develop the key skills required to thrive in the hospitality industry.

I came across the role online and was aware that Hilton was a leading brand that was recognised worldwide. This appealed to me and I thought it sounded like a great opportunity.

What do you do in your job?

I work to provide great hospitality for various events, including large meetings (a hundred people or more), hospitality events with various football teams and evening three course meals (two hundred or more guests). I have also worked a few weddings which I always find exciting. Every event is different, so there are new challenges each day and we get to meet a wide range of guests, like football teams from different countries. As we have a large team, I get to work with different people. This is what makes it so exciting to work here – my routine varies on a daily basis.

However, my main responsibility is to provide each and every guest with excellent hospitality to ensure that they have a great stay with us. My main duties are to assist with guests’ needs and requirements, working with the team to provide food service and inputting the Hilton values into my day to day work.

What do you like most about working for Hilton?

When I get asked where I work, I love saying that I work at Hilton. I feel passionately about my job. I like knowing that the guests have had a fantastic stay. It feels great to be part of their experience and that as a team we have worked together to deliver a memorable stay.

What are your plans for the future?

I would love to progress and further my skills at Hilton to try out different roles. It would be great to have the opportunity to work abroad and try a totally new experience.
